“Which Way Home” (1)

This movie, nominated for Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary, caught my attention a long time before all Americans were so involved with the heated debate about building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. I was so stunned and saddened by the astonishing stories of those children who had to endure the long journey in order to go to the North, with the hope of reuniting with their parents or being adopted by an American family.
They were smuggled onto buses and then rode on top of a freight train called by the locals “La Bestia” (The Beast), which carried them from Central America to U.S-Mexico border. The children, whose ages ranged from 7-15, witnessed hatred, violence, rape, corruption and death.

(Kevin was a 14 year-old boy, who travelled 1450 miles on top of the freight train from El Salvador to the U.S. His dream was to go to Manhattan to see the skyscrapers, and to find a job so he could send money back to his mother, who was suffering in an abusive relationship with his stepfather. Kevin landed in the U.S.,
but was deported back to his hometown. He made this same journey

twenty five cruel nights?

abandoning mommy’s bed
drunk by this rowdy beast
who carries you
toward the North, the indefinite, and to the hatred hell?

deaf to mommy’s calling
let yourself be seduced by the intoxicating high buildings
just in order to smile, to cry, and to die?
Kevin,
because I know,
it is because of this luxury dream to bring a petal of smile
to the adobe house, to your little mommy,
and the dirty stream,
that is sobbing around the door trim,
and for the dew that is trembling mute.

It is because of
the wings of the dream
the clouds along the deceiving wind
who are flirting with you, carrying you
urging you
to the North, to the South,
to the unknown beam.

seducido por aquellos embriagadores rascacielos,
para reír, para llorar, o para morir?

es por ese lujo risueño de traer un pétalo de risa
para mamita, para la chocita
y para el riachuelo que
lloriquea frente al umbral
cuyas yerbas se mecen temblando de vergüenza.

《何處是歸途》
（多年前，早於美國舉國上下就邊境修築高牆、杜絕拉美非法移民入境的全民大辯論，我已為拉美兒童在移民浪潮中的悲慘遭遇深深震撼。瑞貝嘉•卡米莎導演的電影記錄片《何處是歸途》於2009 年由美國HBO 出版發行，2010 年贏得Emmy 電影大獎，及Academy Award 和Spirit Award 最佳記錄片提名。
影片追踪了一群中美洲的孩子，年齡七歲至十六歲之間。他們離家出走，沿路趴乘汽車火車（當 地人為此稱呼載貨的列車為”惡魔”），長途跋涉抵達美國墨西哥邊境。這些孩子的夢想就是設法偷渡美西邊境，或泅水、或翻越四十幾度高溫的沙漠，到“北方”去，去尋找多年不見的爸媽，或者贏得一份工作，賺錢幫忙家鄉不得溫飽的親人，或被好心的美國人收養，過上與美國孩子一樣有書讀、無掠殺的日子。這些孩子在長達三千多公里的顛沛中，目睹親歷了暴力、搶劫、強姦、警察的欺壓和腐敗。許多人或暴斃路野沙漠，或踏上美國大陸後即被扭送回國。這是一群天真、無助、無人看顧的移民流浪兒。）
